| A flop when first released, despite favourable reviews, Howard Hawkss fast, furious update of restoration comedy is now recognized as a definitive screwball farce, thanks to the witty dialogue, sharp direction and a cavalcade of funny performances. The emphasis is on elegance in the face of disaster. There's too much slapstick for my taste, and Hepburn borders on the irritating, but its undoubtedly a classic. Peter Bogdanovich copied copiously from it in What's Up, Doc? |
