A mime (Jean-Louis Barrault) falls hopelessly in love with an enigmatic courtesan Garance (Arletty), with tragic but intensely romantic consequences.

Marcel Carne's classic tragic-romance, a lavish costume drama set in Paris during the 1840s, is a meditation on different sorts of love, most memorably the unreciprocated kind. I'm sorry to say that I've never found it very moving, or been able to take it totally seriously because I find Barrault so mannered, but that's probably my loss. It's bursting with life, magnificent visually, and widely considered to be one of the finest films ever made. |
