Big, bold, butch movie by Michael Cimino set against the background of the Vietnam War. The macho overtones become wearisome; the view of the Viet Cong is insultingly racist; and the film says surprisingly little about the conflict - it also annoyed the Left by not being conventionally anti-war. Although it is wonderfully photographed by the Oscar-nominated Vilmos Zsigmond, its greatest strength lies in the leading performances of Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, John Cazale and John Savage.
