Kurosawa's epic is about an apparently primitive man who's more in tune with his Siberian environment than the "sophisticated" people who patronise him. The film exemplifies the weaknesses of Kurosawa's later output - a plodding pace, a facile environmentalism, and a tendency to lecture long after the point has been made - but it's wonderful to look at. One further caveat: it needs to be seen on the big screen.
