A San Francisco police inspector (Clint Eastwood) isn't fussy about legal niceties as he sticks up for law and order.

Cop movies had become so stereotyped in their liberal responses that this tough, well-made, exciting thriller came as a welcome relief. The fact that it was little more than a western in modern dress did not save it from being hated by most critics. An enormous and well-deserved hit, it spawned four sequels (Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact, The Dead Pool ) and innumerable imitations. Recent critics have been much more kindly disposed towards it.
