Bergman's most accessible film is notable for the lack of that bleak pessimism which is usually considered his hallmark. It is essentially a fantasy childhood, a celebration of idealized family life, a piece of Dickensian escapism - and none the worse for that.
Its long, even in its shortened form, and somewhat lacking in a sense of narrative direction - but very charming. Sven Nykvist's Oscar-winning cinematography is among the most ravishing ever committed to celluloid.
The art direction and costumes also won Academy Awards.
