Not quite up to the Dick Powell version of 1944, and Mitchum finally got to play Philip Marlow too late in life; but his performance, Dick Richards's direction and Chandler's classic one-liners splendidly evoke a mythical Los Angeles of the 1940s. Charlotte Rampling is well cast as the femme fatale. Watch out for Sylvester Stallone as one of the baddies.
