Enthusiastic young Germans are sent to their deaths in World War I.

One of the great anti-war films, directed by Lewis Milestone with nods in the direction of Eisenstein and Fritz Lang. It still dictates the way we see the 1914-18 war, and is all the more remarkable because we see the war from the viewpoint of German soldiers. Arthur Edeson's cinematography was Oscar-nominated; and the film itself was hugely acclaimed. It was voted Winner of the Photoplay Gold Medal for Best Film of the Year by the moviegoing public of America; came top of the Film Daily poll of American film critics; won the National Board of Review citation for Best Film of 1930; and was awarded the Picturegoer Seal of Merit for an Outstanding and Exceptional Motion Picture.
