Cop (Gene Hackman, pictured) tries to break a drugs ring.

Excellent thriller, convincingly acted (especially by Gene Hackman, pictured), with an authentically sleazy New York atmosphere. Owen Roizman's colour cinematography (rightly Oscar-nominated) is wonderfully grim. Even the chase - the one under the elevated railway - manages to be original, though it's been so often imitated that inevitably it lacks the impact which it had on release. The sequel, wittily entitled French Connection II, was a disappointment.
