Tale of two rival oil families.

Plodding, uninspired, overpraised soap opera now remembered principally for James Dean's (pictured right) last performance, which may strike modern audiences as hopelessly mannered and self-indulgent (Hudson and Taylor, pictured left, are much more impressive). The film is on a grand scale and picked up a large number of Oscar nominations - for Dmitri Tiomkin's music, Boris Leven's art direction and the editing by William Hornbeck, Philip W. Anderson and Fred Bohanan. George Stevens picked up the best Director award, but his handling of the performers is uncertain; more worthy recipients might have been cinematographers William C. Mellor and Edwin DuPar.
