Unhappy country girl (Patty Duke) turns Hollywood sex goddess (Kim Stanley) but still can not find happiness.

| Relentlessly vicious indictment of the Hollywood star system and especially the Marilyn Monroe cult, written - at times over-written - by that self-appointed scourge of the media, Paddy Chayefsky. Kim Stanley doesn't quite have the looks of which sex goddesses are made, but gives a powerful performance in her big-screen debut. Lloyd Bridges is fine in the Joe DiMaggio role of the sports star husband (though here he's a boxer, not a baseball star). The amazingly unsubtle script, which for some reason was Oscar-nominated, is the thing which makes this film a camp classic. |
