Joe Dante’s witty comedy-horror film starts too slowly and is too scary for the young, but it’s great fun for teenagers upwards - especially if they are cine-literate enough to catch some of the subversive allusions to old movies. A massive hit - though not with the critics, who found it hard to categorise.
