Ageing gunfighter (Gregory Peck, pictured) rides into town to see the wife and child he abandoned, but finds there's no such thing as retirement for a killer; it's kill or be killed.

Driven by character rather than action, The Gunfighter was not a hit in 1950. But it's gained in critical respectability over the years, as one of those adult westerns which paints an authentic picture of the 19th century west, and a burgeoning small-town community. Gregory Peck underacts effectively.
