| A severely pruned version of Shakespeare's tragedy: Olivier excises Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, and interperts the play as being "the tragedy of a man who couldn't make up his mind". Olivier's directorial attempts to make the film more cinematic are more distracting than effective, and his performance hasn't stood the test of time - he seems bent at times on putting the "ham" back into Hamlet. A far more moving performance comes from Jean Simmons as Ophelia. The art direction and costume design won Oscars; William Walton's score was also nominated. |
