| One of the best Woody Allen films - mature, funny, charming, moving - with a splendid array of sympathetic performances. Michael Caine and Dianne Wiest (pictured left with Barbara Hershey centre and Mia Farrow right) won Oscars, as did Allen's screenplay: Woody's own performance may well be his best. Carlo de Palma's outstanding cinematography sets New York in soft colours: a departure from the starker vision of Allen's usual cameraman, Gordon Willis, but it suits the warmer, kindlier vision of Allen's script. Susan E. Morse's Oscar-nominated editing is unobtrusively excellent. |
