Prison experiences turn an innocent man (Paul Muni, pictured) into a savage criminal.

Paul Muni gives his most powerful performance in this prison movie milestone, one of Mervyn Le Roy's finest - and, shockingly, based on a true story. Drastic reforms of the US penal system followed the film's release. It can still disturb, although the supporting performances look awfully one-dimensional. Sol Polito's cinematography is outstanding.
