| Eisenstein shot this film without a script, and it shows more clearly than any other "classic" the limitations of the auteur theory. Though pictorially splendid, the film's a mess - clumsily acted and edited, with a narrative that is excruciatingly slow. Part II, which deals with attempts to unseat the great dictator, was suppressed until three years after the death of Josef Stalin; and Eisenstein never got round to his threatened Part III. Still, Prokofiev's score is fab. |
