Director Martin Scorsese investigates the sinister side of showbiz celebrity. Robert de Niro is at his best as menacing would-be megastar Rupert Pupkin, and Jerry Lewis gives the performance of his life as the nasty comedian who has Pupkin as his biggest and most threatening fan. A movie thats one of a kind (although it has obvious thematic connections with Taxi Driver ), it's too dark to have found favour with a mass audience; but it is a masterpiece of cinematic black comedy.
