Pakulas flawed thriller starts as a straightforward detective story; but, along the way, the emphasis switches to character and the developing relationship between Sutherland and Fonda. There's far too much exposition, and it is clear that no one connected with the movie had much interest in the thriller aspect, since the plot is predictable and the woman-in-peril climax is poorly handled. (It's surely a mistake that we see Fonda from the killer's point-of-view, rather than vice versa, when we have been made to sympathise with her so strongly.) It's most interesting as a snapshot of a "modern" woman circa 1970, strong and vulnerable at the same time; this is probably Fonda's finest performance.
