Dated but delightful escapism which made Clair's international reputation. The musical numbers are beautifully integrated into the plot - which may not seem unusual now, but certainly was in 1930. The film's success proved influential on the course of the modern musical; and the chase sequence in the opera house was later imitated by the Marx Brothers in A Night At The Opera.

"I wanted an atmosphere of foolishness... We put gauze between the actors and the sets, which created an illusion of unreality." |
