And an enormously long film, about the Normandy landings in June 1944.

| Spectacular combat movie with a gung-ho attitude to war and a dated obsession with national stereotypes, but a proper respect for the courageous men involved. The emphasis is on the Americans, but a few British actors (notably, Sean Connery and Richard Burton) are allowed a look-in from time to time. An Oscar-winner for cinematography (by Jean Bourgoin, Henri Persin and Walter Wottitz) and special effects; the art direction and editing were nominated. |
