| Billy Wilder's gruelling drama has Oscar-nominated cinematography by John F. Seitz, fine editing by Doane Herrison, and a great score by Miklos Rozsa. Ray Milland gives a sterling performance - although it might have been better if we knew more about the reasons for the anti-hero's alcoholism. As it is, the leading character's redemption in the final reel seems a tad sudden and improbable. Among the film's incidental pleasures are its poetic evocation of 40s New York. The American liquor industry offered Paramount $5 million for the negative of the film, in order to destroy it. |
