Francis Ford Coppola's extravagant drama about Vietnam is visually inspired and evidently sincere about the horrors of war, but almost ruined by its pretentious ending, built around a hopelessly self-indulgent performance by Marlon Brando. Coppola's wife Eleanor made a terrific documentary about the making of this film - Hearts of Darkness.
"My film is not about Vietnam. It is Vietnam."
(Francis Ford Coppola)
