Life and times of a French leader (Albert Dieudonne, pictured).

Like many, I first saw Napoleon in Kevin Brownlow's reconstituted 1981 version, with a live orchestra performing Carl Davis's score, and it was as impressive as it was overlong. Gance has a simplistic view of Bonaparte as a man of destiny; contemporary critical accusations of fascistic intent have some merit. However, its cinematic boldness - especially its use of split-screen, colour and moving camera - remains extraordinary. It was well worth reconstituting.
