Two orphan girls (Lillian and Dorothy Gish), one of them blind (Dorothy), become separated and caught up in the French Revolution.

The plot is the creakiest melodrama, the narrative rambles on forever, and most of the acting looks terribly overstated; but sumptuous staging, attention to historical detail and some thrilling sequences (especially in the final reel) make this probably the most watchable of Griffith's epics today. And The Gish sisters are very touching.
