Three soldiers are unjustly courtmartialled for cowardice during World War I.

Reviewed by Chris Tookey

Although one-sided and melodramatic, Kubrick's powerful anti-war film contains fine performances, an authentic evocation of trench warfare, many memorable visual moments (such as the condemned men's journey to the stakes where they are to be shot) and a genuine anger at corruption and incompetence among the officer class. The film was critically acclaimed, but a commercial failure. It was banned by the French Government and the US armed forces in Europe.
