Puppet with ambition of becoming a real live boy embarks upon career as wooden actor.

Reviewed by Chris Tookey

Stern morality tale about the importance of not lying is transformed into a joyful masterpiece by superbly detailed animation, memorable supporting characters who compensate for the essentially passive hero, and enchanting songs. The score won an Oscar, as did the song When You Wish a Star , beautifully performed by Cliff (Ukelele Ike) Edwards, who provides the voice for one of Disney's most endearing creations, Jiminy Cricket. This must be one of the great films of all time - not only is it brilliantly made, it has a universal resonance for every child, who can respond to Pinocchio's view of the world as a frightening but fascinating place to discover.
