Alexander Kordas cheerfully muckraking, irreverent, historically inaccurate biopic has achieved classic status - mainly thanks to Laughtons charismatic, Oscar-winning performance, one of the most fondly remembered in cinema. The odd musty joke doesnt spoil the wit of Arthur Wimperis and Lajos Biross screenplay. Elsa Lanchester, Laughtons real-life wife, is outstanding as the ugly Anne of Cleves, especially in the card-playing scene. It was voted third-best film of the year on The Film Dailys annual poll of US film critics (Cavalcade was first, 42nd Street second). It cost only ?60,000 to produce.
