Superficially a gangster movie, but the thriller plot is very subsidiary. It's really more of a mood piece about American low-life, masterfully directed by Louis Malle, with his usual eye for the telling detail. Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon excel, especially together, so that the film also works as a character study.
