Immaculate film of E.M. Forster's novel, a bit slow but not without humour, and deservedly one of Merchant-Ivory's biggest successes. Jenny Beavan and John Bright won Oscars for their costumes, as did Gianna Quaranta and Brian Ackland-Snow for their production design. Tony Pierce-Roberts was Oscar-nominated for his lovely cinematography. It won both the BAFTA and London Critics' Circle awards as Best Film of the Year.
