Wayne gives a splendidly battered, world-weary performance in this, the second of Ford's cavalry westerns - it comes between Fort Apache (1948) and Rio Grande (1950). The scenery of Monument Valley is among the most magnificent ever on film, and Winston C. Hoch's cinematography won an Oscar. Unfortunately, the story rambles, and there's much too much maudlin sentiment and wearisome low-comedy (mainly from Victor McLaglen). |
