A cyborg assassin (Arnold Schwarzenegger, pictured) is sent from the future to our present.

James Cameron’s directorial flair, an ingenious story and some witty comic observation - plus Arnold Schwarzenegger’s laconic, monolithic presence as the killer android - made this low-budget sci-fi thriller first a surprise hit (it grossed over $40 million) and then a cult classic. But there’s little characterisation, and the time travel scenario makes no logical sense (not that it did in the sequel, either). Memorable moments, but to this critic at least it’s over-violent, and surpassed as entertainment by Terminator 2.
