Infuriatingly fragmented, enigmatic and pretentious; yet Nic Roeg's film is also one of the most atmospheric, frightening and memorable horror movies ever, and makes stunning use of its Venice locations. The film contains one of the longest, sexiest lovemaking scenes, in cinematic history and one of the nastiest shocks.
